Talent

It is mother effing hot in Denver right now. I guess I can't complain because at least its a dry heat. Or that's what people say right? Whatever. It's still freaking hot. I went to the elementary school and did my squats and sprints and what not after work and I was honestly just going through the motions tonight, but at least I got it done. Then I came home and half-assed dinner, some bland chicken and bell peppers, but the risotto was delicious.

Why does it always have to be the risotto that's delicious?

Story of my life.

So I'm watching America's Got Talent. Complete waste of time but what else am I going to do on a Monday night? Something productive, you say? Yeah right.

Anyway, some of these people have talent. Some have amazing talents. Some have crappy talents and should get new talents. But at least they're trying to have talent. I really liked the Father/Son combo who basically did handstands on each others hands. Straight arms too! That takes some amazing upper body strength. The guys who danced to the song with their pecs were pretty hilarious too.

But it made me start thinking - do I have any talents?

I mean, yeah, I have things I'm good at. I think I'm fairly smart, I was always good at school. I'm pretty good at my job. I know a damn lot about health and nutrition (nevermind if it shows or not). I am a fast reader. I like cake. But those aren't talents; they're just things about me.

I can't play guitar. I certainly can't sing. I'm not the dog whisperer and I suck at handstands.

I guess not everyone can be a superstar though, and honestly, I'm okay without having some fantastic talent. In fact, I think I'd hate to be able to do something that made everybody look at me. That would mean I'd have to brush my hair every single day.

So do you have any talents? Do you wish you did?

Sigh..I wish I had talent. I am smart -- when we play games at parties people always want me on their team. That's about it however. I can't play an instrument, have a crummy singing voice, can't play any sport worth a darn, can't draw or sew or knit...

Hmmmm, talent, let me think... I think I've got a good sense of humor. Not really a talent I suppose. There are a lot of things I wish that I could list. Maybe I should write those down and then try to work towards them... :)

I'm a fast reader, but I don't like cake. I do, however, love frosting. So, if you ever want to share a cupcake with me, I'm a good partner for that.

Something my blog readers don't know about me is that I am a professional singer. I'm in a small women's group here in town, and we travel throughout the city entertaining people for money. We even have a CD out. I have some other random talents as well ... like spelling and ummm ... bedroom things. At least that's what I've heard.

As much as I'd like to share that with David Hasselhoff (mmm .. Knight Rider), I don't think they'd be good for television. :)

I wish I had talent, for sure. I feel like I've spent my life trying to develop something enough to get myself noticed, which has maybe meant ignorning the things that really were talents...and are often not as obvious as playing an instrument or whatever. I guess it goes back to trying to spend more time learning to love ourselves exactly as we are. Such a novel idea, eh? It's great to have you back, by the way! I'll be hoping things cool off for you soon!

Hugs,
Jen

Well you totally have the talent for writing a blog that always makes me laugh and/or feel inspired!

I have a talent for art. I often have a hard time talking about things I'm good at (it feels too much like bragging or being snooty) but that's one thing that I know that I do well. I love drawing or painting, it relaxes me and it's nice to see something that I know came from my creativity and my own two hands.
I do wish that I could sing. I have a horrible singing voice and I guess I'll be destined to being a rockstar only in the shower or the privacy of my car!
Oh and don't get me started on the heat. 106 degrees today when I was driving home! Every year when it starts to get hot I get so pissed off, you'd think I'd have learned by now to accept it gracefully but instead I bitch and moan and complain!

I think being a fast reader IS a talent (and I speak as a freakishly fast reader). It lets you get work done more quickly, and you get to read more books because you get through them faster.

Me? Apart from the fast reading, I'm a great speller. And I'm good at learning poems or song lyrics by heart. Unfortunately, these talents aren't very noteworthy after the age of twelve or so.

I think we all tend to undervalue the talents we actually have. I'd love to be really musical, and to be effortlessly organised, but the people I know who can do these things take them for granted. They think anyone could do them. Meanwhile, they fixate about the talents they don't have.
